Shaft Voltage Does Not Need to Reach the Bearings
Variable frequency drives can induce damaging voltage onto an electric motor shaft. When that voltage searches for a path to ground, repeated electrical discharge can pass through the motor bearings and contribute to pitting, frosting, fluting, lubricant damage, noise, vibration and premature bearing failure.
